Brown Trail

The Brown trail is 1.5 km and it takes about 20-40 minutes to walk. The level of difficulty is 3. The trail features both meadow, edge, and forest habitats holding a variety of plants and animals in each. Birds of the fields and meadows are prevelant here as Bobolink, plus Field and Song Sparrows are very visible. In migration, a Blue-winged Warbler was also spotted in this area.

In the oak and conifer patches along this trail is a good area for searching out Wild Turkey and other game birds like Ring-necked Pheasants. As with other forested trails on the property, numerous varieties of wildflowers can be observed in the growing season. These include the Violets and Canadian Anemone as seen in the pictures. Take the time to study the flowers you see and add them to your 'life list'.

Violets in the Summer Meadow and Edge Habitat

You can easily make your walk a loop by using the branches of the White and/or Blue Trails which the Brown trail cuts through to experience more diversity of life on your journey. It's totally up to you - you decide what you'd like to see and go for it!

There are a few places where thickets are encountered and in these areas you can expect a great congregation of bird species, such as Brown Thrashers and Gray Catbirds. In the meadow and forest edge areas be on the lookout for the Eastern Towhee that breeds here.

Near the trail's entrance view one of Hullett's tall grass prairie areas and take a look in the adjacent marsh area for ducks, herons, and kingfishers! This is also a fine area for butterfly watching during the spring and summer months.
