BLUE TRAIL

The Blue trail is 1.4 km and it takes about 30 - 40 minutes to walk. The level of difficulty is 2. An ancient (circa 60 BC - 200 AD) native archaeological site occurs just east of this path which follows along the Menesetung, or (South) Maitland River. The trees and water along the banks of River gives the Blue trail some breathtaking views. Be aware of Hullett's Green Dragons who hang out in this neck of the woods.

Breathtaking Blue Trail View Blue Flag - Blue Trail forest

The old growth forest at Hullett, about 60 ha worth, is found in the area of the South Maitland River and this trail. Forest interior birds are prime targets here. Amateur Botanists will enjoy perusing the area for wildflowers, trees and different types of fungi (see the pictures below!). An amazing array of species can be seen, heard and appreciated in this perfect retreat along the river. Any season will yield an abundance of different creatures great and small from both the plant and animal kingdoms.

Hullett's Green Dragon - a Species at Risk in Ontario Fungi along the trail

If you watch really closely you may catch a glimpse of a Sharp-shinned or Coopers Hawk in the forest. These Accipiters or 'true hawks' are denizens of the forest. They perch inconspicuously on tree branches in the forest and often pursue their prey (birds and small mammals) on foot through thick brush, many times at their own peril.

As with other trails at Hullett, deer are viewed along the river on the Blue Trail. Their paths are well marked, in winter especially, as they forage through the forest. Silver Maple and White Ash are main tree forms here but components of Willow and Elm are also present. Some of Hullett's largest, oldest and interesting trees can be found along the Blue Trail.
