Water and Wetlands
Wetlands are complex ecosystems with many important environmental functions - wildlife habitat, recreation, ground water filtration and recharge, and flood control. Explore the importance of wetlands in the water cycle, learn about local wetland flora and fauna and consider participation in a wetland conservation project. Supplementary classroom materials are available from Ducks Unlimited Canada to further student awareness.


The Hullett Provincial Wildlife Area offers a very diverse set of Habitat types for the different wildlife species found here throughout the year. Hullett is a unique combination of conserved natural habitat areas and many areas of created or enhanced habitat intensively managed by professionals. As an example, many of the created wetlands areas are actively managed by Ducks Unlimited habitat staff with the goal of meeting the life cycle needs of various waterfowl species.


The wetlands at Hullett provide necessary habitat for many rare and endangered birds, plants and animals. It is perfect place for a naturalist and bird-watchers who appreciate nature. Hullett is made of Ponds, Pools, Swamps, Shrublands, Rivers, Agricultural crops, Fallow fields and Dyketops which all provide food, habitat and shelter for waterfowl, turtles, muskrats, deer, rabbit, turkey and a variety of other aquatic species.


Wetlands provide a mechanism for ground water filtration and recharge. It is vital for sustaining the all the natural systems that exist in Hullett Wildlife. The Ducks unlimited habitat staff control water levels in the various Ponds, Pools and Swamps. This a powerful restoration and management tool to enhance habitat for native plants, birds, fish and other wildlife species.
