Focus on Forests

Ontario's forests are essential for environment, social and economic reasons. This program explores the diversity of forest ecosystems at HPWA while promoting awareness of sustainable resource management. The sustainable resource management looks into all aspects of the ecosystems. The decisions are made based on the understanding of human environmental impacts and plant growth and function over the short-term and long term.

Youth learn tree identification skills and observe nature first hand. The tree idenfication involves recognizing the tree based on characteristics such as leaves, bark, twigs, and fruit, and dichotomous key and simple classification techniques. Activities developed by the Ontario Forestry Association complement this program. Within the Hullett Provincial Wildlife Area there are a variety of managed and unmanaged ecosystems. Eight different habitats are managed on the property. These are wetlands, watercourses, agricultural fields, fallow fields, native grasslands, dyketops, hedgerows and upland woodlots.

With respect to social aspects, many local and non-local user groups utilize the marsh for their personal enjoyment, group activities as well as for volunteer and educational opportunities. Hullett users provide income to outfitters, guiding companies, and outdoor retail businesses through goods and services purchased by patrons of the Hullett Provincial Wildlife Area.
