Welcome to the Hullett Spring Ephemerals Webpage
The Spring Ephemerals Walk on April 28th was a foggy and damp one. Nine intrepid naturalists made the trek through the Sugar Bush and had good looks at blooming spring flowers. The White and Red Trilliums were just beginning to emerge and trout lily dotted the landscape. Other species seen included Bloodroot, Round-lobed Hepatica, Wild Ginger, Wild Leek and Blue Cohosh. Down by a small stream, Skunk Cabbage and Marsh Marigold were found in abundance. Woodpeckers and Flickers were the main bird species encountered and were well heard in the foggy air. Those who braved the elements had a good day.
Spring Ephemerals are wildflowers that bloom in early spring before the trees leaf out. These plants flower for just a few weeks. Spring Ephemeral Species include: (mouse over the pic to see what it is) Trailing Arbutus, Bloodroot, Skunk Cabbage, Yellow Lady's Slipper, Trout Lily, Mayapple, Fringed Polygala, Carolina and Virginia Spring Beauty, Jack in the Pulpit, Marsh Marigold, Early Meadow Rue, Squirrel Corn, Purple or Red Trillium, White Trillium and Blue Cohosh (not shown).
