Canoe Day at the Marsh – May 12 Turtles sunning

Seven canoes and 17 guests came out for Canoe Day at Hullett Marsh. The group was able to get a good look at a Black Tern, a species at risk in Ontario, as well, an American Bittern and Sora Rail could be heard throughout the marsh. Muskrat were prevelant and the canoeists were able to observe both American Coot and Common Moorhen. Apart from it being a bit windy, the day was enjoyed by all who participated.

Canoe Day at Hullett Marsh takes place Saturday, May 12th, presented by the Friends of Hullett.   Join us for a guided canoe tour of the Bluebill Pool.  We will be viewing ducks, marsh and shorebirds, songbirds, muskrat, beaver, and deer.  Plant species can be studied as well as dragonflies, butterflies and turtles.  Enjoy the day stroking silently through the clear blue water at Hullett.

We will be meeting at the Bluebill Pool boat launch, just off the Main Viewing Stand, 40905 Summerhill Road at 9:00 am.  From there we will set off on a canoeing adventure into the extraordinary marsh habitat at the Hullett PWA.  Make sure to bring your canoe, appropriate attire for the weather, and bug repellant.  Water levels range from knee deep to 3 meters (approx. 9 feet), so plan accordingly.

Bird species will be the order of the day, as examples of waterfowl, marsh bird, shore bird and songbird types can also be scrutinized by keen-eyed observers.  Highlighting this grouping is the Sandhill Crane, a wading bird that stands 4 feet tall and has a wingspan of over 6 feet.  A few of these majestic birds can be spotted over the marsh and fields of Hullett.  Other species of note that may be on display on this day are: Wood Duck, Greater Yellowlegs, Great Blue Heron, plus other species of ducks, geese, sandpipers and herons.  Add to this a stunning array of songbirds, including 3 different varieties of swallow, plus wrens, warblers, sparrows, and the whistling song of the Eastern Meadowlark.  Bird watchers won’t want to miss this splendid assortment of ‘goodies’.

In addition to birds, the marsh is alive with the sights and sounds of beaver, muskrat, groundhog and deer.  Plus there’s more!  Dragonflies and butterflies can be seen in and around the vegetation of the marsh.  Both emergent and submergent plants can also be studied.  There’s something for everyone!  Come out and join us May 12th for Canoe Day at the Hullett Provincial Wildlife Area.  For more information on this and other events at the marsh, check our website, www.hullettmarsh.org, call 519-482-7011, or email outreach@hullettmarsh.org
