Butterflies of the Hullett Provincial Wildlife Area

The interesting part of watching butterflies is that different species fly at different times of the year. Take the Wood Nymph for instance. It flies only in summer. Up until July, this species wasn't around. However, in early July they're seen everywhere at Hullett. Variety is the spice of life they say, and it's no more apparent as it is with butterflies. Go out at different times of the year and you're liable to see new species at each time! On this page, note the beautiful Baltimore Checkerspot! One of our few butterflies in which the underside pattern and colour is (perhaps) more spectacular than the upperside

A nice shot of a Great Spangled Fritillary. Normally these guys are flying and don't stop to rest - great for exercise, but not so great to get a nice picture! Thankfully this one took a break long enough for a photo op.
